Pots, pans, and radiators

My wife and I bought our house six months ago. We took it on faith that the steam-heat radiators would work come winter. We have not been disappointed. Something we didn’t anticipate, though, is all the knocking that goes along with so much metal expanding and stressing all throughout the house. When the furnace in the basement kicks on and injects more steam into radiators in eight different rooms on three floors (counting living/dining/kitchen on first floor), the noise is like an ill-advised kindergarten trip to the pots and pans manufacturing plant. (Is that even a good simile?) The point is, it’s fucking loud with all the knocking that reverberates throughout the house. But at the same time it’s very…cozy. And charming.

We’re really coming to love this place.
