ExxonMobil’s recent marketing plan promises this supposed-to-be-comforting motto: “Life takes energy, and energy…lives here.” Maybe something went wrong in my social training, but are we really cool with corporations in control of sustaining not just our lives but life itself? And then there’s the disconcerting message at the beginning of the same commercial, where the company assures us, silly hoi polloi that we are, that it has our best interests in mind. “Hey, don’t worry about energy, or your life. We’ve got you covered.” Thanks and all, Big Brother, but I think I’ll look into these matters myself. Something tells me your word isn’t gospel.
