Lightman’s talk of size in this essay, and how it adds such significant perspective to our lives, summoned my hardly dormant adolescent self to begin revisiting and newly assessing the vitality of dick jokes. He took a more elevated route, wondering about the grandeur of the universe and the vastness of the infinitesimally small. What are we compared to dark matter or free particles? How do we measure ourselves across the various scales that science places before us? Do we find humility? Pride? Insignificance? Indifference?
Come to think of it, these are the things we (men) likely feel in considering dick size. I think I’m at the indifferent stage. Not sure I ever passed through pride.
