Home ownership does things to you

Owning a home does weird things to you.  Where as six months ago, I wouldn’t have cared, today I suddenly find myself with a real opinion regarding the pros and cons of owning a deep freezer for the basement.  The same with power tools.  Before owning my house, before I got into building my own furniture, I had no idea what a mitre saw is.  Now I’m a member and frequent borrower from my local tool library.  When trawling my local Ace Hardware, I find myself stopping in the power tool aisle, contemplating each of the different drill bits or Dremel attachments. And in those moments of deep interest, a thought and feeling percolate to the surface: “Thank god I’ve developed a sincere interest in things commonly associated to general cultural ideals of accepted masculinity.”

Now, in reflection, I wonder if I should be worried that:

  1. I have developed an interest in things commonly associated to general cultural ideals of accepted masculinity;
  2. I find relief in having developed this interest.
