I caught myself feeling genuine outrage over True Detective not winning a Golden Globe a few nights ago. I didn’t watch the awards ceremony; perhaps worse, I was infrequently checking for updates on the internet. Even though this behavior might suggest it was commanding only my peripheral attention, the fact that I cared at all was annoying.
And then I was reminded of a Noam Chomsky quote I came across a few months ago: “The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of possible opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum.” So it’s not even worth questioning the Golden Globes or my shameful marginal interest, I guess.
How do you get outside the spectrum?
