A post about “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”

I don’t know why, but something made me start thinking about Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas–the book and the movie–last week.  So I made M watch the movie Sunday night, before she met up with friends to watch the new Avengers movie.  Like any first-time viewer, she was very confused about the movie, the drug use, the plot.  But, for me, after having read so much Pynchon now, I feel like I understood the movie now more than ever before, even if at a very base, subconscious level.  And the thing that sticks out the most to me is that this country, the USA, would be an absolutely different place if Nixon had never been elected to office nor Reagan.

Of course, M didn’t believe me when I told her the movie was a metaphor.  But I was at a complete lose to explain that metaphor when challenged.  It’s still very immediate history, but history I didn’t experience.  For me, it’s just the watermark that I can see, but I can’t explain it.
