“They Live” was an awesome movie, and I miss Rowdy Roddy Piper

“Rowdy” Roddy Piper passed away last week.  He was Canadian and my favorite wrestler during that brief period of my childhood when I knew about WWF/WCW wrestling.  He was also in one of the awesomest movies of my childhood, They Live.  When watched as a kid, it was just an action alien movie. When watched as an adult, man, it’s so much more.

Watch that last link.  It’s incredible.  I never realized that the fight between Frank and Nada was supposed to symbolize the struggle, pain, and eventual catharsis of the pulling away of the “fantasy.”  And this is just one clip out of a larger documentary, The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology.  I’m watching that tonight.

The host of the documentary is Slavoj Žižek.  I see this guy everywhere, but know absolutely nothing about him.  I’ve never read any of his works, just seen him in random clips linked to from different sites.  Who is this guy?  Canelli, is this one of your guys?
