“the happiest effects” (A People’s History…Ch. 7)

If suddenly we tear our hearts from the homes around which they are twined, our heart-strings will snap.

“It affords sincere pleasure to apprise the Congress of the entire removal of the Cherokee Nation of Indians to their new homes west of the Mississippi. The measured authorized by Congress at its last session have had the happiest effects.”

A white invasion…

“the happiest effects”

Hundreds died there from lack of food and from sickness.

“sincere pleasure”

His easy reelection in 1832 suggested that his anti-Indian policies were in keeping with popular sentiment, at least among those white males who could vote.

“their new homes”

Sir…Do the obligations of justice change with the color of the skin?

“the entire removal”

In a kind of death spasm one of the last vestiges of the original Indian world was being dismembered and its collapsing remnants jammed bodily into an alien new world.

“the happiest effects”

If you will go to the setting sun there you will be happy; there you can remain in peace and quietness; so long as the waters run and the oaks grow that country shall be guaranteed to you and no white man shall be permitted to settle near you.”

“the entire removal”

…in possession of land of their own, which they shall possess as long as Grass grows or water runs. I am and will protect them and be their friend and father.

“sincere pleasure”

The white men do not scalp the head; but they do worse – they poison the heart…

“authorized by Congress”

Jackson the frontiersman, soldier, democrat, man of the people – not Jackson the slaveholder, land speculator, executioner of dissident soldiers, exterminator of Indians.

“their new homes”

He is resolved to sweep them from the face of the earth…If they cannot be made good they must be killed.

“the happiest effects”

He acted, he said, by the “immutable laws of self-defense.”

“sincere pleasure”

…we addressed ourselves feelingly to the predominant and governing passion of all Indian tribes, i.e., their avarice and fear.

“the entire removal”

We bleed our enemies in such cases to give them their senses.

“It affords sincere pleasure to apprise the Congress of the entire removal of the Cherokee Nation of Indians to their new homes west of the Mississippi. The measured authorized by Congress at its last session have had the happiest effects.”

…and the name of this nation, hitherto the sweet omen of religion and liberty, will stink to the world.
