Xmas Books 2017

We got books again for Xmas!  Last year we pulled down 14 books and some B&N money.  This year we pulled down 15 and some Ivy Bookshop money.

  2. The Savage Detectives by Robert Bolaño
  3. Libra by Don DeLillo
  4. The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead
  5. The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu
  6. The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories by Jeff Vandermeer and Ann Vandermeer
  7. Martian Time-Slip by Philip K. Dick
  8. The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness by Michelle Alexander
  9. Joy the Baker Over Easy: Sweet and Savory Recipes for Leisurely Days by Joy Wilson
  10. Exposed: The Victorian Nude by Alison Smith
  11. The Beer Geek Handbook: Living a Life Ruled by Beer by Patrick Dawson
  12. Wealth, Poverty and Politics by Thomas Sowell
  13. Portsmouth: Collected Saturdays
  14. Planck: Driven by Vision, Broken by War by Brandon R. Brown
  15. A Load of Hooey by Bob Odendirk

No Thomas Pynchon this year (Against the Day is the only novel of his I don’t own).

The Savage Detectives is my second Bolaño novel, purchased before I’ve even finished reading my first Bolaño novel.

Libra will be my second DeLillo novel.  Need to tread lightly there as White Noise really bummed me out (it was a great book! but left me a bit depressed at the end).  Still, Libra is supposed to be his masterpiece.

The Intuitionist is Whitehead’s first novel but will be my second novel of his.  Last year I got The Underground Railroad and was completely blown away by it.

Big dip into sci-fi this year: The Three-Body Problem, The Weird, and Martian Time-Slip.  Perhaps I’m gearing up ideas for a second novel I might write?

We managed to read half the books from last year.  I think we’ll be able to top that with this year’s selections.
